Summary

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, written by Michael Rosen and illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, is a children’s book that puts an exciting twist on the classic nursery rhyme. It is an engaging story of a family of adventurers who venture outdoors in search of a bear. Along the way, they face various obstacles which they must overcome to reach their goal.

In Chapter 1, the story starts with the family going on a bear hunt with each of them asking “What’s that up ahead?” They soon come across a long grassy meadow, which they have to wade through. As they travel through the meadow, they start to feel excited about their adventure.

In Chapter 2, the family finds a big deep river and a muddy swamp. They reluctantly decide to cross it, despite the danger that lies beneath the water’s surface. As they make it to the other side, they are relieved to find that there is no bear waiting for them.

In Chapter 3, the family encounters a squelchy, wet mud and a hot, prickly grass. They have to maneuver their way carefully through the mud and the prickly substance before finally emerging onto dry land.

In Chapter 4, the family comes across a big, dark forest. They are filled with fear and trepidation, yet they’re determined to go on. As they make their way through the forest, they encounter rustling and noises of unknown origin. Luckily, they make it out in one piece and continue on their journey.

In Chapter 5, the family continues on their bear hunt and find themselves in a narrow, gloomy cave. As they move forward, they come across an old, rusty bear trap. Despite the risk, they proceed on and, eventually, they stumble across a big, furry bear. The family is delighted but also terrified, as they must work together to escape the cave and the bear.

In the final Chapter 6, the family sprints out of the cave and hurry to make it back home. As they return, they are exhausted and relieved to be safe. They proudly look back on their successful bear hunt and relish in their sense of accomplishment.
